Borough of Kirklees Disability swimming is part of the Borough of Kirklees swimming club and offers opportunities for young people with a disability  to take part in competitive swimming.

In September 2004 Kirklees Active Leisure introduced a Learn to Swim programme for young people with a Learning Disability. A small number of the swimmers within the group entered a Learning Disability specific event in Reading and were very successful. This then encouraged more swimmers to have aspirations of becoming a competition swimmer and so the group contacted Borough of Kirklees Swimming Club for support and to join the club as members.

The section was developed over the years and swimmers enter both disability specific and internal club events.

The club was initially set up for young people with a Learning Disability however as the club has progressed the section has an all-inclusive programme with a range of classifications within the club.

The coaching team are all volunteers

  • Gemma Hill-Wood – ASA Teacher & Coach Level 2 (ASA Disability Teacher Level 2)
  • Eddie Lim – ASA Teacher & Coach Level 2
  • Victoria Cuff – ASA Teacher Level 2
  • Chris Kempley  ASA Teacher and Coach Level 1
  • Alison Rank      ASA Teacher and Coach Level 1
  • Cerys Jones – ASA Teacher Level 1

The club also has a volunteer training opportunity which encourages support on the poolside at both training and events with the opportunity to become fully qualified coaches.
